The Youth Alpha 2011

Written by Stéphane Lavénérable

Youth Alpha is an evangelistic course specifically designed for teenagers to help the young people meet Jesus. A typical session consists of a meal to facilitate interaction, praise and worship, games, teaching and group discussion. The first session, which attracted no less than 70 participants, began on the 9th April of this year with the theme being “Who is Jesus? This new interesting, thought-provoking Youth activity is scheduled every two weeks at Immanuel Hall from 3-5p.m.

We have now reached our fourth session – “Who is the Holy Spirit?” Our previous one’s theme was “How can I be sure of my faith?” All those present had a great time together and were blessed by the teaching brought by Reverend Eric Ma Fat. The main points covered were:

1. We should trust the Lord at all times.

2. We should have a relationship with God so that we can taste His love.

3. In 2 Corinthians 5:7 – We live by faith, not by sight.

At the end of the talk, the youths were given time to discuss in their respective group and raise any questions or thoughts they may have. This part is really important because one can see others’ perspectives and sometimes, can even learn from experiences others have been through. Then after the discussion period, we played some games which were fun and related to the theme of the day.

QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUTH ALPHA

“En Aparté” with Charles Jolicoeur, one of the Table Leaders:

1. What do you think about the Youth Alpha sessions so far?

I think that it is a good thing because since the start of Youth Alpha, I realised that there are some youths present during the sessions that do not form part of any cell groups.

Youth Alpha is different from the cell group system. However what I appreciate the most is that all those present during the sessions are there to bring their help and this creates a kind of fellowship.

2. Which session did you like the most? Why?

I liked all the 3 sessions: Who is Jesus, How and why do I pray, and how can we have faith.

So far I have never seen Jesus in that way. “How can we have faith” has increased my faith and made me realise that nothing is impossible for God.

“How do I pray” has made me realise that I should have a relationship with God because he wants to be in a constant relationship with his children.

3. What did these sessions bring to your personal life?

Many changes, they have mostly helped to increase my faith and made me truly realise how great Jesus is.

4. What do you want to say (as encouragement) to your friends who are yet to come to the Youth Alpha Session?

I encourage everyone to come to the Youth Alpha sessions because it will greatly help us in our Christian life as we grow stronger. It is never too late to come. I really look forward to the session about the Holy Spirit on Saturday 30 July. I am convinced that great things will happen on that day. I hope to see a lot of new faces, as well as the usual ones.
